Indonesia is the 4th most populous country in the world, after China, India, and the US, with almost 270 million people. There are roughly 1,500 radiologists throughout the country and are not equally distributed.
RAD-AID has partnered with Rumah Sakit Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM), a public general hospital and its affiliated Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (FKUI). RSCM provides primary, secondary, and tertiary care, and acts as a national referral center for government hospitals. Overall, the hospital has over 950 inpatient beds, with >90% occupancy rate. The hospital sees about 3,200 outpatients every day. There are 19 radiologists, 57 residents, nearly 40 radiologic technologists, and 10 radiologic nurses. Sonography services are provided by radiologists and residents. Subspecialty services offered include breast imaging, neuroradiology, head and neck imaging, interventional and cardiovascular radiology, abdomen, MSK, pediatric radiology, thoracic imaging, urinary system and genital imaging, nuclear medicine. MSK and abdomen are considered to be the leading subspecialties.
RSCM/FKUI and RAD-AID’s partnership provides an opportunity for RSCM/FKUI to set a national standard in radiology services. Education, healthcare IT, and clinical service optimization are three areas identified as needing additional support.
In 2020, RAD-AID Indonesia has provided remote lectures in breast imaging and interventional radiology and is looking forward to expanding further.
